Historical Context: The Origin of the Assumption
Belief in Mary’s Assumption reaches back to the earliest centuries of the Church, long before it was formally defined. Ancient accounts, known as the Transitus Mariae, described how the apostles gathered around Mary at the end of her earthly life and witnessed her being taken up, body and soul, into heaven. Although these early writings are not part of Sacred Scripture, they reflect the deep devotion of the early Church to the mystery of Mary’s Assumption and helped shape its liturgical tradition. Devotion to this mystery grew steadily through the centuries, celebrated in the liturgy of both the Eastern and Western Church.
It wasn’t until November 1, 1950, that Pope Pius XII solemnly defined the Assumption as a dogma of the Catholic faith in his apostolic constitution Munificentissimus Deus, declaring that Mary, “having completed the course of her earthly life, was assumed body and soul into heavenly glory.” This nine-day novena has been prayed by the faithful for generations as a way to prepare our hearts for the feast that follows on August 15.
A Story of Trust in Mary’s Intercession: Saint Stanislaus Kostka’s Death on the Feast of the Assumption
Among the many stories connected to devotion to Our Lady’s Assumption, few are as moving as the death of Saint Stanislaus Kostka, a young Jesuit novice in Rome in the year 1568.
Stanislaus was only seventeen years old, nine months into his novitiate, when a sudden fever left him gravely ill. Rather than fear death, he felt a quiet confidence: he had long asked Our Lady for the grace of dying on the anniversary of her Assumption into heaven. On the evening of August 14, he wrote a letter to Mary asking for this favor, and his condition worsened through the night.
He received Viaticum and prayed with the novices and priests gathered around him. In the early hours of August 15 — the feast of the Assumption — Stanislaus told those present that he could see the Blessed Virgin approaching, surrounded by angels, coming to bring him to heaven. Shortly afterward, he died peacefully.
News of his holy death spread quickly through Rome. People came from across the city to venerate his remains, convinced they had witnessed the quiet fulfillment of a young man’s trust in Mary’s motherly care. Saint Stanislaus Kostka was canonized in 1726 and is remembered today as the patron of youth, students, and Jesuit novices — a witness that Our Lady hears even the simplest requests of those who trust her completely, even the request to be welcomed home on her own feast day.

About the Assumption of Mary
The Assumption is one of the four Marian dogmas of the Catholic faith, alongside the Immaculate Conception, the Divine Motherhood, and Mary’s perpetual virginity. It teaches that Mary, preserved from sin from the moment of her conception, was taken up body and soul into heavenly glory at the end of her earthly life — sparing her the corruption of the grave that is the consequence of original sin.
The Church has never defined whether Mary died before being assumed into heaven. The dogma simply teaches that, at the end of her earthly life, she was assumed body and soul into heavenly glory.
August 15 is a Holy Day of Obligation in the United States and throughout the universal Church. For us, the Assumption stands as a sign of hope: where Mary has gone, we hope one day to follow, body and soul, if we remain faithful to her Son until the end.
