Before the Ashes: A Prayer for a Heart Ready to Return to God

Ashes in a wooden bowl forming a cross, symbol of repentance before Ash Wednesday

Many times we hesitate to begin Lent because we feel unready, distracted, or not “holy enough.” Yet God does not ask for perfection.

Before the ashes are placed upon us, before the season begins, there is a quiet moment to pause and return. This prayer is for that moment — when the soul feels tired, scattered, yet still longing for God.

Merciful Father,
before the ashes,
before the desert,
before the call to repentance becomes visible,
I come to You just as I am.

My heart is not fully ready.
My love is imperfect.
My intentions are fragile.
I see my weakness
and how easily I drift away from You.

Still, I want to return.

Not with perfect resolutions,
not with promises I cannot yet keep,
but with a humble heart
that knows it cannot begin without Your mercy.

Cleanse what has grown heavy within me.
Soften what has become hardened through distraction and routine.
Awaken in me a sincere desire for conversion,
rooted not in guilt, but in love.

Before the ashes touch my forehead,
receive my willingness to come back.
Prepare my heart.
Lead me home.

Amen.
