The streets of Jerusalem were filled with cries of Hosanna — “Save us, Lord.” Palm branches were laid at His feet. Cloaks were spread on the road. For one brief, glorious moment, the King of kings was welcomed as He deserved.
Palm Sunday opens Holy Week — the most sacred seven days in the Catholic calendar. As we receive our blessed palms and enter into the Passion of Christ, this prayer will help you begin that journey with a heart ready to follow Him all the way to Easter.
This Palm Sunday Prayer for 2026 helps Catholics begin Holy Week with faith and reflection as we remember Christ’s triumphal entry into Jerusalem.
What Is Palm Sunday?
Palm Sunday commemorates the triumphant entry of Jesus into Jerusalem, described in all four Gospels. The crowds welcomed Him with palm branches and shouts of praise — a royal greeting for the King of Israel. Yet within days, those same crowds would call for His crucifixion.
The Church celebrates Palm Sunday on the Sunday before Easter. It marks the beginning of Holy Week and the start of the Paschal Triduum — the three holiest days of the Christian year. By honoring this day in prayer, we enter consciously into the mystery of Christ’s Passion, Death, and Resurrection.
Blessed palms received on this day are traditionally kept in the home as a sign of faith and protection throughout the year.
When Should You Pray This Prayer?
- On Palm Sunday morning — before Mass, to prepare your heart
- During the blessing of the palms — as you hold yours in your hands
- Throughout Holy Week — as a daily offering to accompany Christ to Calvary
- When you feel your faith is tested — remembering that the crowds who shouted “Hosanna” also fell away
- As a family prayer — to enter into Holy Week together
- Before reading the Passion narrative — to receive it with an open heart
Short Palm Sunday Prayer
Lord Jesus Christ,
as the crowds welcomed You into Jerusalem with palms and cries of Hosanna,
we welcome You today as our King and Savior.
Enter our hearts as You entered that holy city.
Teach us to follow You faithfully through the days of Your Passion
so that we may share in the joy of Your Resurrection.
Bless our homes, our families, and these palms we carry today
as signs of our faith in You.
Hosanna in the highest. Amen.
Powerful Palm Sunday Prayer
In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
Lord Jesus Christ, today the Church raises its voice in the same cry that filled Jerusalem on that sacred day: Hosanna! Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord.
I join my voice to that of the crowd — not with the shallow praise that fades by Friday, but with a faith that chooses to follow You all the way through the darkness of this week and into the light of Easter morning.
As You entered Jerusalem on a humble donkey, You showed us what true kingship looks like — not power over others, but love poured out for others.
Teach me, Lord, to lay down my pride as the people laid down their cloaks. Teach me to offer You not just my words of praise, but my whole life — my time, my plans, my will — spread at Your feet as an act of worship.
You knew, Lord, what awaited You in that city. You knew about the betrayal, the trials, the thorns, the cross. And yet You entered — willingly, lovingly, for me.
When I am tempted to turn back from what is difficult, remind me of Your courage on this day. When following You costs something, let me remember that You paid everything.
Lord, I hold these blessed palms in my hands as a sign that I welcome You as my King — not only today, but every day. Not only in moments of joy and hosannas, but in the silence of Holy Saturday, in the sorrow of Good Friday, and in the hope that carries me through every dark night.
Reign in my heart. Reign in my home. Reign in every corner of my life that I have not yet surrendered to You.
For all who are suffering this Holy Week — those carrying heavy crosses of illness, grief, or doubt — I ask You, Lord, to walk beside them. Let them feel that they are not alone on the road to Calvary. Let them know that the same Jesus who entered Jerusalem in triumph is the Jesus who weeps with the broken, who lifts the fallen, and who brings life out of every tomb.
Holy Mary, Mother of the Lord, you followed your Son faithfully through His Passion.
Pray for us, that we may remain faithful to Christ through every trial and every cross.
Pray for us, that we may have your faithfulness — not the faithfulness of the crowd, but the faithfulness of the mother who stood beneath the cross when everyone else ran.
In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
