Who Was Saint Mark the Evangelist? (Feast Day: April 25)

Saint Mark the Evangelist is one of the four Gospel writers, yet his story is often overlooked. He was not among the Twelve Apostles, and at one point, he even abandoned a mission. Still, God chose him to proclaim the life of Christ. His journey reminds us that failure is not the end of our calling.

Historical and Spiritual Context

Saint Mark, also known as John Mark, lived during the earliest days of the Church. His mother’s home in Jerusalem served as a gathering place for Christians, and he accompanied Saint Paul and Saint Barnabas on their missionary journey. Although he left the mission early, he later reconciled with Paul and became a close collaborator of Saint Peter. Mark recorded Peter’s preaching, which became the Gospel of Mark — the shortest and most direct of the four Gospels. According to the constant tradition of both the Eastern and Western Church, he founded the Church of Alexandria and is believed to have died as a martyr around 68 AD.
