The Litany of Saint Michael the Archangel is one of the Church’s most beloved traditional prayers for protection, invoking Saint Michael under his many titles as defender, prince of the heavenly host, and guardian of the faithful. Many pray it alongside the Novena to Saint Michael, especially in the days leading to his feast on September 29, though it may be prayed at any time we feel the need for his protection.
Who Is Saint Michael the Archangel?
Saint Michael’s name means “Who is like God?” — his answer to Lucifer’s rebellion against Heaven. Scripture names him as leader of the heavenly host, the one who casts Satan and his angels out of Heaven in the Book of Revelation. The Church honors him as guardian of the faithful, protector of the Church, and patron of those who face spiritual and physical danger.
When Should You Pray the Litany of Saint Michael?
- In moments of spiritual temptation or attack
- Before difficult decisions requiring courage
- For protection of your home and family
- Alongside the Novena to Saint Michael
- Whenever you feel the need for spiritual defense
