The Rosary is one of the most beloved Catholic prayers in the world. Whether you are learning it for the first time or returning to a devotion you once knew by heart, this guide will show you how to pray the Rosary step by step, including every prayer, every mystery, and a visual guide to help you follow each bead with confidence.
The Rosary invites us to meditate on the life of Jesus through the heart of Mary. With each decade we meditate on the mysteries of Christ’s life — from the Annunciation to the Resurrection — while offering simple prayers that have nourished Catholic faith for centuries.
What Is the Rosary?
The Rosary is a Scripture-based prayer that leads Catholics through meditation on key events in the lives of Jesus and Mary, known as the Mysteries. It combines vocal prayer — the Our Father, Hail Mary, and Glory Be — with contemplative reflection. The word “rosary” comes from the Latin rosarium, meaning “crown of roses,” and has been prayed by Catholics for over 800 years.
Saint Louis de Montfort called it “the most excellent of all prayers.” Popes, saints, and ordinary faithful have turned to it in times of war, illness, grief, and uncertainty — and found peace.
Prayers of the Rosary
Before learning the steps, it helps to know the individual prayers used throughout the Rosary. Each one is a pillar of Catholic devotion:
✝ The Apostles’ Creed
A profession of faith that opens the Rosary.
✝ The Our Father (Lord’s Prayer)
Prayed at the start of each decade.
✝ The Hail Mary
The heart of the Rosary — prayed 10 times per decade (53 total).
✝ The Glory Be (Doxology)
A short prayer of praise prayed after each decade.
✝ The Fatima Prayer (O My Jesus)
Added after each Glory Be by request of Our Lady of Fatima.
✝ Hail, Holy Queen (Salve Regina)
The closing prayer of the Rosary.

Why Catholics Pray the Rosary
For centuries, Catholics have turned to the Rosary in moments of joy, suffering, uncertainty, and gratitude.
The Rosary:
- draws us closer to Jesus through Mary
- roots our prayer in Sacred Scripture
- helps us meditate on the life of Christ
- brings peace and spiritual focus
- unites families and communities in prayer
Our Lady of Fatima also asked the faithful to pray the Rosary daily for peace in the world.
A Short Prayer to Begin the Rosary
Before you begin, you may use this short prayer to open your heart:
“O Blessed Virgin Mary, as I take up this Rosary, unite my prayers with your own. Lead me closer to your Son with each bead I pray. May this Rosary be a garland of love I place at your feet. Amen.”
Many Catholics also pray to Saint Joseph, the guardian of the Holy Family, asking for his protection and guidance.
