Every day, at 3:00 in the afternoon, something sacred passes through time. This moment is known as the Hour of Mercy, revealed to Saint Faustina. It was at this hour that Jesus breathed His last on the Cross — the moment when mercy poured into the world through His wounds. Jesus asked Saint Faustina to honor this hour with a specific prayer, and He attached to it promises of extraordinary grace. If you have never stopped at 3:00 PM to pray, today is a good day to start.
What Is the Hour of Mercy (3 PM Prayer)?
The Hour of Mercy is the daily practice of pausing at 3:00 PM to pray in union with the suffering and death of Jesus on the Cross. It comes directly from the Diary of Saint Faustina Kowalska, where Jesus Himself described this hour and asked that it be honored.
Jesus told Faustina: “At three o’clock, implore My mercy, especially for sinners; and, if only for a brief moment, immerse yourself in My Passion, particularly in My abandonment at the moment of agony. This is the hour of great mercy for the whole world.” (Diary §1320)
It is not a long prayer. It is not complicated. It is a moment of remembrance — a pause in the middle of the day to look at the Cross and say: I believe in Your mercy. I trust in You.
Why Is 3:00 PM So Important?
At 3:00 PM, the Church remembers the moment of Jesus’ death on the Cross — the hour when He gave His life for the salvation of the world. It is the hour of sacrifice, of love poured out completely, and of mercy made visible through His wounds.
In the Gospel, we see that Jesus cried out and breathed His last at this hour. What seemed like defeat became the greatest victory: sin was conquered, death was overcome, and the door to eternal life was opened for all.
This is why the Hour of Mercy is not just a devotion — it is a return to the heart of the Gospel. When we pause at 3:00 PM, we unite ourselves with Christ in His Passion. We stand at the foot of the Cross, even if only for a moment.
Jesus revealed to Saint Faustina that this hour is filled with special grace. He asked that we immerse ourselves in His suffering and trust in His mercy, promising that nothing will be refused to the soul that asks through His Passion.
When Should You Pray the Hour of Mercy?
The Hour of Mercy is prayed at 3:00 PM every day, but it is especially powerful:
- On Good Friday — the actual anniversary of Christ’s death on the Cross
- During the Divine Mercy Novena (Good Friday through Divine Mercy Sunday)
- When praying for a dying person — Jesus promised special mercy for those who pray the Chaplet at the bedside of the dying
- When you are in spiritual darkness or feel distant from God
- When you need to ask forgiveness — for yourself or on behalf of another
Hour of Mercy Prayer (3 PM Prayer)
At 3:00 PM, pause wherever you are. You do not need a chapel. You do not need a rosary. You only need a willing heart.
Begin by making the Sign of the Cross, then pray:
“You expired, Jesus, but the source of life gushed forth for souls, and the ocean of mercy opened up for the whole world. O Fount of Life, unfathomable Divine Mercy, envelop the whole world and empty Yourself out upon us.”
(Repeat three times:) O Blood and Water, which gushed forth from the Heart of Jesus as a fountain of mercy for us, I trust in You.
You may also add:
Lord Jesus, at this hour You stretched out Your arms on the Cross and gave Your life for mine.
I come to You now, not with great words, but with great need.
Have mercy on me.
Have mercy on those I love.
Have mercy on the souls who have no one to pray for them.
Jesus, I trust in You.
Amen.
How to Make This a Daily Practice
You do not need to pray a long prayer every day. Even a brief pause is enough:
- Set a daily reminder on your phone at 2:55 PM so you are not caught off guard
- On busy days, simply say: “Jesus, I trust in You” — that is enough to honor the hour
- On quieter days, pray the full Chaplet of Divine Mercy — it takes about 15 minutes
- If 3:00 PM passes and you forget — pray it whenever you remember. God is not watching a clock. He is watching your heart.
