He was among the first Jesus called — mending nets with his brother John when Christ walked by and said simply: “Follow me.” They left everything without hesitation. James became part of Jesus’ innermost circle, present at the Transfiguration, present in Gethsemane during the agony. And he became the first apostle to give his life for the Gospel, beheaded by Herod in Jerusalem. If you need courage to follow Christ without looking back, ask Saint James to intercede for you.
Who Is Saint James the Apostle?
Saint James the Greater was the brother of John, son of Zebedee. Tradition holds that he followed Jesus after hearing John the Baptist proclaim, “Behold, the Lamb of God.” He became one of the Twelve Apostles and part of Jesus’ closest circle alongside Peter and John — present at the Transfiguration on Mount Tabor and Jesus’ agony in the Garden of Gethsemane.
James’s death is the only biblical record we have of the death of one of the Apostles — he was the first of the Twelve to give his life for his Master, beheaded under King Herod Agrippa around 44 AD. According to tradition, his body was later taken to Galicia in northwestern Spain, where Santiago de Compostela became one of the most important pilgrimage sites in Christian history — the Camino de Santiago still draws thousands of pilgrims every year.
His feast day is July 25.

Prayer to Saint James the Apostle
Saint James, Apostle of Christ,
you left your nets without looking back
when He called your name.
You walked with Him on the mountain of glory
and knelt with Him in the garden of agony.
You did not know, when you said yes,
everything that yes would cost you.
Pray that I may have your courage —
to follow without needing every answer first,
to stay present in both glory and suffering,
to give what is asked of me
without counting the cost too carefully.
Saint James, patron of pilgrims,
walk with me on the road I am traveling now.
I bring before you this intention:
[mention your intention here]
Saint James the Apostle, pray for us.
Amen.
