Who Was Saint Peregrine? – A Life of Conversion and Faith

Saint Peregrine Laziosi was born in 1260 in the town of Forlì, Italy, into a well-off and politically influential family. As a young man, he was fiercely involved in anti-papal movements and known for his violent temperament. However, his life took a dramatic turn after a profound encounter with a holy priest.

When Saint Philip Benizi, a Servite friar, visited Forlì to preach peace, the young Peregrine struck him in the face. In response, the priest humbly forgave him, and this unexpected act of mercy broke through Peregrine’s hardened heart. Deeply moved, he repented, experienced a powerful conversion, and later joined the Order of the Servants of Mary (Servites).

As a Servite friar, Peregrine embraced a life of penance, prayer, and service, especially to the poor and sick. He became a priest and was admired for his humility and dedication. Known for choosing to stand instead of sit as a personal penance, he eventually developed a cancerous wound on his leg, and doctors recommended amputation.

The night before the surgery, Saint Peregrine prayed intensely before a crucifix, entrusting his suffering to Christ. That night, he saw Jesus descend from the cross and touch his leg. The next morning, his cancer was gone.

This extraordinary healing became the foundation of his patronage for those suffering from cancer and other chronic illnesses. He was later canonized by Pope Benedict XIII in 1726, and his feast day is celebrated on May 1st.

Miraculous Prayer to Saint Peregrine

Saint Peregrine, patron saint of cancer patients

O great Saint Peregrine, you have been called “The Mighty” and “The Wonder Worker”, because of the numerous miracles which you have obtained from God for those who have had recourse to you.

For so many years you bore in your own flesh this cancerous disease that destroys the very fiber of our being, and who had recourse to the source of all grace when the power of man could do no more.

You were favored with the vision of Jesus coming down from His Cross to heal your affliction. Ask of God and Our Lady, the cure of the sick whom we entrust to you.

(Pause here and silently recall the names of the sick for whom you are praying)

Aided in this way by your powerful intercession, we shall sing to God, now and for all eternity, a song of gratitude for His great goodness and mercy.

Amen.
